pitchin’ popchips

guest blogger: frank o’brien, founder of “the pitch” winning conversation agency

when we got the call to pitch popchips, we were already familiar with the brand and  were surprised to find out that more people weren’t. we were even more excited when we heard that the goal of the assignment was to raise awareness because at that point we were looking at all of the great marketing material already put out by the brand thinking “holy (pop), how are we going to top this?!”

something special stood out to us about popchips – something you don’t see in every brand, much less a brand that has been around for only a few short years. it’s something that we at conversation see in ourselves: a strong culture, a focused brand, and an unwavering attention to detail. we were a perfect fit to work with this brand.

it’s rare that you feel, or know, that you’re going to hit a home run. agencies tend to have a level of superstition around them and talk a lot about karma, so throughout the process we didn’t want to be too confident but we knew that we were on to something special. all of the pieces lined up – the assignment, the brand, our process, the idea – but there was still one piece outstanding. no matter how right we felt, you never know until the decision is made. the brand has the final piece to the puzzle, the final say.

fortunately for us, our initial instincts and feelings throughout the process were dead on:  the popchips team gets it. from the agency side, winning a pitch isn’t always about what concept you pitch. it’s about who you are, how you pitch, and what you show while in that pitch room. if

all you’re pitching are ideas, then you’re only as good as your last idea. we pitch partnership, creative thinking, an ability to “get it done,” and a true focus on our clients’ business. by choosing conversation, it was clear that popchips was committed to adding that building block to their story to take it to the next level, which is something we focused on most in developing our campaign – a campaign that worked just as hard and that was as passionate as the agency and the client in the pitch room.

everyone at conversation puts their heart and soul into our business and our clients’ business. (after all where would we be if we didn’t have a hand in making our clients successful?)  we live our mission the way popchips lives theirs. it’s special when you find that kind of synergy, and we’re proud to be a part of the extended popchips family.

thank you, popchips, for the opportunity to work with such an amazing brand, amazing team, and an amazing business. let’s keep poppin’ with the year of pop

pop vp taste test: star wars

more pop culture than star wars it does not get (couldn’t resist the yoda reference)… from super bowl commercials to spoofs, and everything in between, arguably, no movie franchise in history has had the popular reach of star wars.

so, my fellow fan boys and girls, jedis, paduans, and scruffy looking nerf-herders, as you await the 3d re-release of episode 1: the phantom menace this friday, I thought you might want an extra helping of star wars pop culture picks to go along with your popchips.

1. lego star wars! these incredibly accurate lego dioramas of scenes from the movies definitely merit the trip to legoland in carlsbad, california, so pack up your bags and get your geek on.  or you can peep my pics right here.

2. liz lemon loves star wars! so many references and so little time…30 rock, one of the funniest shows on television busts out the star wars references on a regular basis.  check this out:

3. in case you missed this year’s vw super bowl commercial sequel to last year’s immensely popular vader kid…

4. now through april 15th, the discovery science center in santa ana is currently home to star wars: where science meets imagination, an interactive exhibit where you can learn about the technology of land speeders and droids, build and test your own robots, and most importantly of all, see up close costumes, props and ships from all 6 star wars films.  total geek out!  I mean, who doesn’t want to take their picture next to han solo and chewbacca’s original costumes?  you can even sit in the cockpit of the millennium falcon.  swoon.  here’s a sneak peek

did I miss anything?  what’s your favorite star wars pop culture reference?

pop vp taste test: CES 2012

every year, electronics companies invade las vegas to show off the latest tech, cutting edge design and lust-worthy gadgets.  after a few days of roaming the CES show floor, i’ve compiled picks that pass my pop culture taste test.

sony’s 46” 3D lcd tv:  no glasses needed!  even though the 3d is not as impressive or pronounced as the models requiring glasses, it is still a nice compromise for people who like the depth of 3d but don’t want to wear those dorky specs. the sweet spot, centered just about 6 feet from the screen, is really beautiful, with vivid depth and movement.  so as long as you can squish your family and friends around that, it’s glasses-free 3d for everyone!

the acousticom sound egg is perfect for escaping from it all to enjoy your favorite movies, music, games, sports, and of course, popchips.  with surround sound and your own personal tv on a swivel arm, it’s available in custom colors and starts at $1,500. sure to do any (wo)man cave proud.

24K gold plated classic Atari 2600 console: for the hard-core game enthusiast, this is a conversation piece for sure. the only thing that would make this any cooler, and justify the $6650 price tag is you could actually play some frogger on it.  but alas, no, it’s just for show.

jack backs are custom wood panels for your iphone. replace the glass back with bamboo, walnut or mahogany, design your custom etching and for just $89-129, your phone becomes a personalized piece of art.  what would you etch on yours?

and in the spirit of all things new, what better place to hook up some popchips enthusiasts with our brand new flavor… sweet potato!  just another cool thing for tech enthusiasts to try out for the first time on the CES floor.
