pop vp’s in great taste: this ain’t no ordinary walgreens!

popping a pose with kurt russell and son, wyatt russell, whose tv show partnering with walgreens will be on air next year!

when i was invited to a sneak preview of walgreens’ new flagship store in hollywood, ca, i thought, really?  a celebrity-studded opening of a drugstore?  um…okay, sure…

so i headed off to the opening night preview, not knowing what to expect and lightbulb moment!  this ain’t your mama’s walgreens! no wonder kurt russell, fergie, lamar odom, terry bradshaw, alison sweeney and tim gunn were all on hand for the opening night party.

in 24,000 square feet of gorgeous open space focused on healthy daily living,  there’s the look boutique (an exclusive beauty and makeup store in store), high end wines and liquors, and a massive fresh daily prepared foods section with a snack selection that will make your head spin.  including  sushi, fro-yo, pastries and popchips, natch.

the popchips team was there with our pop ‘n pose photo booth to help one of our favorite retailers celebrate the opening of their 8000th store, and found out that even ceo and walgreens owner, greg wasson loves popchips!

a big congrats to walgreens for the opening of their flagship store in hollywood! wanna meet there for saturday yoga class?  tweet me! hungry for more?

popchips-crusted sweet potato pie cookies

happy thanksgiving everyone!  don’t know about you, but every thanksgiving i always look forward to the sides and the desserts. anyone with me here?  so i’ve created a recipe that combines both, while bringing a tasty pop to your traditional thanksgiving table.

these crunchy, savory, chewy, sweet cookies are sure to hit the spot.

ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 stick (1/2 cup) salted butter, room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2  cup light brown sugar
  • 1 egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup sweet potato puree
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

orange glaze & popchips crust

  • 1 1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 3 tablespoons freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2  .8oz bags sweet potato popchips, crushed into crumbs

preheat the oven to 375 degrees. line two cookie sheets with parchment paper.

in a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, allspice, nutmeg, and salt.

cream together the butter, granulated sugar and the brown sugar until light and fluffy and the volume has increased. add the egg and the vanilla and mix until incorporated. stir in the sweet potato puree blending until smooth. gradually beat in the dry ingredients and combine well.  stir in the pecans.

drop by heaping tablespoons onto the prepared cookie sheets, leaving about 2 inches of space between each cookie. bake until the cookies are lightly golden around the edges and they spring back from the touch, about 18 minutes. let cool completely on the cookie sheets before glazing.

for the glaze and popchips crust: combine the confectioners’ sugar, orange juice, and vanilla in a small bowl and stir until smooth. drizzle over the cookies, and immediately sprinkle with popchips crumbs.  drizzle again with glaze and top with more popchips.  let harden for 1 hour before serving.

hope you enjoy and  tweet me – will you be breaking out the eating pants this year or staying in your skinny jeans?

pop vp’s app of the week: post card on the run

although music, fashion, movies, and popchips do get our heart pumping, we can’t forget about that special place in our hearts for apps!  filed under “hey-why-didn’t-i-think-of-that?”, check out: postcard on the run.

think irl photos are a thing of the past?  nope.  as long as people have refrigerators, there will always be a place for photos.   postcard on the run is a free app that easily turns pics on your smart phone into postcards of your worldly travels.  you can personalize them with touch screen handwriting, and it can gather your friends’ addresses for you.  send them anywhere in the world starting at just $1.49, with just a few clicks from your phone, making sweet little postal surprises for all your friends and family.

here are some postcards i’m sending from my adventures as vp of pop culture…

snackin’ out with bruno mars
getting an x games exclusive with bmx-er, coco zurita

pop vp’s in great taste: new music for your ear holes

here at popchips, we’re not only concerned about what you put in your mouth, we care about what you feed your ear holes as well.  if your music rotation has gotten staler than a fried potato chip, here are some great choices to wake up your musical taste buds.

gold fields: you may not know them right now, but you’ll be hearing a lot more from this aussie import in months to come.  currently touring the us with infectious dance beats and tracks like dark again, gold fields will keep you coming back for more.  check out their popular “treehouse”

and now for something totally different…dustbowl revival offers toe-tapping, hip-swinging music that’s a mash-up of swamp-gospel, jump blues and hot swing.  no idea what i’m talking about?  watch this:

known for their raucous live sets, you can catch the 15 piece orchestra next at kcrw 89.9fm’s masquerade ball at the park plaza in downtown los angeles on october 27.  if you can’t make it, do your ears a favor and download their halloween-with-a-twist single, “josephine” here.

with the quintessential pop hook of the “best song ever” and so-cool-the-grownups-won’t-understand-it hair, the ready set, aka jordan mark witzigreuter, and his single, “give me your hand (best song ever)”, are poised on the brink of pop breakthrough.

signed to pete wentz’s record label & currently touring with the all-american rejects, we like his video and great taste in party snacks…

hope you enjoy!  who’s your favorite new artist right now?  tweet me

pop vp’s in great taste: oooh la la

in the name of bringing the best of pop culture to loyal popchips fans, i took my popchips out on the town in search of something new.   something spicy.  something hot.  and boy, did we find it!

for one night a month, king king club in hollywood, california, morphs from a roaring 1920′s parisian speakeasy, to an 80′s electro rock club and everything in between, by hosting the original live show, rouge follies.  a modern vaudeville cabaret, rouge follies is part throwback, part tease, and a pop culture salute unlike any other.

the co-ed revue, brainchild of director and choreographer, lisa eaton, mixes vaudeville, burlesque, comedy, acrobatics, improvisation, and the best dancers in los angeles, doing what they do best when they’re not working for the biggest names in pop music.  working it out!

hungry for more?  i thought you might be…

book your ticket now,  they have just a few more dates this year, and  i promise, you’ll have a bodice-ripping, balloon-popping good time.  just ask actress jaime pressly, who caught the show the same night, or my popchips, who particularly enjoyed getting close with the performers…

ooh la la!

this week in pop: presidential edition

although there is no debate as to which snack should earn your vote, when it comes to this year’s presidential race, the two candidates are just now hitting crunch time for your vote.

heading into tonight’s first presidential debate, here’s a pop culture roundup to whet your appetite…politically speaking.

if you’ve been too engrossed in pop culture (drew had her baby!  bruno mars parodies whatta man!) to have the debates on your radar, well…that’s completely understandable.   gangnam style alone could keep your web browsing minutes fully occupied.  the first debate airs tonight at 9pm est, live streaming on the web also, and focuses on domestic policy.  the full schedule of debates can be found here.

our friends over at funny or die have compiled a very informative list of 5 things to expect from the first presidential debate.

and if you can’t wait for the weekend to catch snl’s skewering of the debate, here’s a taste of some of their best from the last round…(blueberry pie, anyone?)

while there’s no debating that popchips is the clear snack of choice across this great land of ours, the only question that remains is: red or blue?
